I like the phrase “too much”, as in “Too much beer is bad for you”. Yes of course, too much is the exact quantity that makes something excessive, i mean too much exercise is bad for you! One thing that isn’t bad for you is too much time on your hands. Whenever something amazing and complex and intimately unnecessary is made, people instantly will say, ‘well they had too much time on their hands’. Too much time on their hands led to the Pyramids, NASA and Angry Birds. Pursuing a task for too long, dedicating too much time, might be the exact amount of time needed to make something awesome. Listen to me getting all philosophical, here are some fantastic ‘too much time of their hands’ videos….
Honda’s amazing and memorable commercial, ‘The Cog’
This commercial was originally released 5 years ago as a short 30 second TVC, but here is the full 2 minute version. The video cleverly takes the audience on a journey as one rolling cog leads to a chain reaction incorporating heaps of other mechanical component from the Honda Accord. Very clever stuff
OK GO’s ridiculously awesome video clip for ‘This Too shall Pass’
OK GO are the masters at too much time on their hands. Their breakthrough song Here It Goes Again included a amazingly choreographed treadmill dance, completely unnecessary, but almost certainly a result of too much time on their hands…
NTT Docomo’s beautiful commercial for their Touch Wood phone
We actually covered this video a few months back and it still holds up. This is a massive xylophone, a completely unnecessary xylophone, but ultimately a wonderful xylophone. A small ball rolls down a hill with too much time on it’s hands….
