Thanks to the good people at Digital Buzz for this find…
New Zealand’s Air Force has conceived an ingenious approach at attracting new recruits who would otherwise be wasting their time on YouTube or playing video games. To appeal to tomorrow’s soldiers they have created a live streaming video games running through YouTube.
Within the game users get to fly a series of aircraft over various landscapes while completing different missions. What’s clever about this is that the battlefield you are flying over is actually just one giant model, with your perspective coming from a interactive webcam live somewhere in New Zealand. As a result the game is only available between 2pm -9pm NZT and does result in some queuing, but it is well worth it. Overall this isn’t perfect, with only a bit of lag the game isn’t perfectly responsive and the concept is needlessly over complicated, but because of that I think it’s brilliant!!
So next time someone tells you to get off YouTube and do something useful, just tell them you are….
